Daniel is Senior Research Scientist at AEGIC and leads our research into the processing of Australian pulses for protein-packed foods and is part of the project Transitioning Australian pulses into protein-based food industries.
Daniel is exploring ways to optimise milling and air classification technology for efficient production of protein concentrates from a range of Australian pulses.
AEGIC’s pulse protein research is currently part of the Global Innovation Linkages Program (Round 3), which is a research collaboration aimed at growing the future of Australian food. AEGIC’s research capabilities in this space have been enhanced with the purchase of new state-of-the-art dry fractionation equipment, obtained through GRDC’s Infrastructure Investment Grant, which was awarded in 2023.
With over 15 years of experience in the industry, Daniel appreciates the diversity of his role and is always looking to learn and develop new skills.
One day he can be sitting at his desk reviewing literature or writing a research paper, and the next day he can be working in the laboratory or in the mill running the air classifier, completely covered in pulse flour. Daniel enjoys building up the industry’s knowledge base on pulses and contributing information that is useful to the industry now and in the future.
His work will inform future commercial-scale pulse dry fractionation operations for protein-based food products, moving the power of pulse protein from ‘paddock to plate.’
Daniel is making significant progress with his work on producing pulse protein concentrates and has benefitted from working alongside Research Assistant Chris Whiteway. In February this year, Daniel published his recent work in the journal Cereal Chemistry, titled ”Dry fractionation of Australian mungbean for sustainable production of value-added protein concentrate ingredients”. This work was followed up with a recently submitted publication to the same journal, currently under review, titled ”Improving the nutritional quality of instant noodles made from wheat flour using dry and wet fractionated mungbean protein ingredients”.
Daniel also contributes his expertise to the Grain Industry of WA Pulse Council.
Thank you, Daniel, for your ongoing contribution to Australian pulses.
AEGIC is an initiative of the Western Australian State Government and Grains Australia.
