North Asia market support

This project aims to support the use of Australian wheat in our North Asian markets of Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

Engagement with these markets focuses on addressing quality requirements, the stability in supply of noodle blends, maintaining Australia’s good reputation as a wheat supplier, and increasing the understanding of the value of Australian wheat.

Australian wheat breeders support AEGIC in these markets to ensure a high degree of cooperation.

AEGIC convenes an expert panel annually with the Japan Flour Millers Association (JFMA) to conduct udon noodle sensory evaluations. This supports Grains Australia’s decision-making process for breeding and classification.

Completed (April-June 2025)

  • In June 2025, we hosted Australian wheat quality seminars in:
    • Taipei: 9 June
    • Tokyo: 17 June (supported by Grains Australia, AGT and InterGrain)
    • Seoul: 23 June
  • In Tokyo in June, we hosted joint AEGIC–JFMA sensory evaluation of the latest udon varieties. We also conducted further sensory evaluation of the colour preferences for udon noodles, supported by Grains Australia.

Completed (July-September 2025)

  • Planning is complete for an upcoming JFMA noodle expert visit in December 2025 for udon noodle sensory evaluations.
  • Planning included consultation with major Australian wheat breeding companies on the material and samples to be included in sensory evaluation, as well as planning for future visits.

Scheduled (October-December 2025)

  • We continue to prepare for the annual udon noodle sensory evaluation panel between 17 November and 5 December 2025.
  • Planning is in progress to also host a visiting noodle expert from a major noodle company to work with the sensory panel.
