High-value Australian hard noodle wheat for East Asia

Asian markets recognise Australian Prime Hard (APH) and Australian Noodle Wheat (ANW) as superior for noodle making. AH is less recognised for noodles, however, through market engagement in China, AEGIC found that a parcel of AH varieties was highly rated for premium noodles.

In response, AEGIC is engaging with other high-value Asian markets including South Korea and Japan to explore the unique opportunity to position Australia as a highly valued AH noodle wheat supplier.

This project initially focused on South Australia; however, it has the potential to create new value for hard wheat growers across the country.

Completed (as of October 2024)

  • We presented the preliminary findings at the South Australian Grain Industry Trust (SAGIT) Annual Update in July.
  • We conducted noodle sensory evaluation with Taiwanese and Japanese flour mills in September 2024 on potential AH wheat varieties, confirming previous positive findings.

Scheduled (by March 2025)

  • We will prepare and provide a progress report for project investors.
