Nigeria is the largest regional economy in West Africa with a population of 173 million as of 2013. Nigeria’s growth rate is forecast at three per cent per annum. Wheat yields are currently around 2–2.5 metric tonne (mt)/hectare but could increase significantly with new varieties under production. Nigeria is a major importer of wheat, particularly from the US, with imports from Australia on the increase.
